Position Title:  Church Nursery Worker

Reports to:  Joint Supervision by Pastor, Director of Youth & Children’s Ministries, and Nursery Committee

Hourly Pay:  $15.00 per hour, paid twice monthly on approzimately the 15th and last day of the month

Schedule:  Sundays during worship services  (exact hours: 8:00am until parents pick up children, approximately 12:00pm)

Location:  First United Methodist Chruch of Carbondale, 214 W. Main St., Carbondale, IL 62901

Position Summary

The Church Nursery Worker provides safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate care for infants and young children during Sunday morning worship services in alignment with the mission of the United Methodist Church.  This role supports families as they participate in worship and community life, helping children experience the love of God in a safe and welcoming environment.

Key Responsibilities

Provide attentive, compassionate, and age-appropriate care for infants and young children during Sunday services
Create a warm, welcoming, and inclusive environment for children and families of all backgrounds
Follow all church policies and procedures related to Safe Sanctuaries (the United Methodist Church’s policy for the protection of children, youth, and vulnerable adults)
Maintain appropriate supervision and ratios at all times, in accordance with church policy
Ensure the nursery space is clean, safe, and prepared before, during, and after services
Greet parents/guardians, assist with check-in/check-out procedures, and communicate clearly about children’s needs or incidents
Change diapers, assist with feeding (as provided by parents/guardians), and support basic hygeine needs
Respond calmly and compassionately to children’s emotional and physical needs
Tidy toys and surfaces after each shift and report safety concerns or supply needs promptly
Work collaboratively with volunteers, church staff, and ministry leaders

Qualifications

Experience caring for infants and/or young children (paid or volunteer experience)
Warm, patient, reliable, and attentive presence with children
Ability to communicate kindly and clearly with parents/guardians and church staff
Commitment to the mission and values of the United Methodist Church
CPR/First Aid certification preferred (or willingness to obtain)

Requirements

Must be at least 18 years old
Completion of background check, Safe Sanctuaries training, and any additional child protection training required by the church or conference
Ability to lift and carry young children and move safely within the nursery space
Reliable transportation and consistent Sunday morning availability

Compensation

Hourly pay: $15.00/hour
Paid semi-monthly
This is a part-time position limited to Sunday mornings.  Additional hours may be available for special events held at the church.
